Chris Nelson is a self taught mixed media artist based in Barrie, Ontario. His practice is rooted in intuitive exploration, material experimentation, and emotional expression. Working with acrylic paint, pastels, charcoal, sand, pencils, and markers, Nelson creates layered surfaces rich in texture and movement.
His work is informed by expressionism and abstraction, allowing instinct and spontaneity to guide each composition rather than predetermined structure. Themes of childhood nostalgia and memory play a significant role, as Nelson draws from personal experience and the emotional imprint of early environments. Natural forms and shifting moods often emerge through abstract gestures and colour relationships.
Nelson’s work invites viewers to engage emotionally, offering space for reflection, sensation, and personal interpretation.
